Engagement of sex workers in the Global Fund processes especially the New Funding Model is imperative in ending HIV. This was said by Daughtue Ogutu of the African Sex Workers Alliance (ASWA), at a workshop to session at ICASA Conference 2015. The workshop aimed to educate participants on how sex workers and sex work led groups in Africa are organizing around the Global Fund processes regionally and in-country and also about ASWA’s trainings that promote sex workers involvement in the Global Fund process.
Ogutu said that it can be daunting for community groups and representatives to both understand and engage effectively since in most communities sex work is illegal. While sex work is illegal in most African countries this group is important as a component in ending HIV Ogutu said. She said that her Organisation is working towards imparting knowledge and skills to ensure sex workers can engage and that sex work issues are fully integrated in Global Fund processes
